Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany remains in stable condition in hospital after collapsing during reserve-team training, with the club expecting him to be absent for weeks.

The 40-year-old Belgian was taken for medical care on Friday after collapsing while watching a training session involving Bayern’s reserve team. He had earlier attended the first team’s training before joining the second-string session led by Dante.

Bayern Munich confirmed that Kompany was undergoing thorough examinations and would remain under medical supervision. The precise cause of the collapse has not been established publicly, and the club has said further medical checks are required.

Sporting director Max Eberl provided a reassuring update on Saturday, confirming that Kompany was stable but would remain in hospital for several days while doctors completed their investigations.

“The good news is that he is stable,” Eberl said in the club’s press briefing.

“He will remain in hospital for a few more days while everything is examined and checked. That shows once again that health is the most important thing in life, not football.”

Eberl said the club had spoken with Kompany and his wife and would give the coach the time he needed to recover. He also stressed that the priority was to understand what had happened before determining when he could return to work.

“The most important thing is that the cause is found and he gets healthy, that he can recover in peace, and that he only returns when he is fit,” Eberl said.

The sporting director added that the initial examinations had produced some results, but further investigation was needed to clarify the situation and establish how long recovery might take.

Bayern expect Kompany’s absence to last weeks rather than days. In the meantime, his coaching staff will oversee training and match preparations, with assistant coach Aaron Danks taking charge for the Bundesliga trip to Freiburg.

The club has made clear that it will not rush the manager back because of the team’s fixture schedule. Eberl said Kompany’s health must take precedence over footballing considerations, regardless of the importance of upcoming matches.

The incident followed a period in which Kompany had also been affected by a viral infection and hip pain, which had caused him to miss training sessions and a press conference. However, Bayern have not confirmed that those earlier issues caused Friday’s collapse.

Kompany’s absence leaves the coaching staff responsible for the team while the medical process continues. Bayern have expressed confidence in the assistants and asked for the focus to remain on the manager’s recovery.

For now, there is no confirmed return date. The club will wait for the results of further examinations before making decisions about Kompany’s recovery timeline and resumption of his duties.
