Borussia Dortmund are set to tie Niko Kovac to the club until 2029 after agreeing terms on a new deal that will keep the head coach in charge for two more seasons.

Kovac’s existing contract runs until 2027, but Bild reports that an agreement has now been reached to extend his stay by a further two years. The final signatures are still required before the extension can be formally announced.

The decision continues a clear push for continuity at Dortmund. Carsten Cramer, Lars Ricken and Thomas Treß have all recently agreed new contracts, leaving Kovac as the last major figure in the club’s senior sporting structure whose future had yet to be settled.

According to Bild, the financial details of Kovac’s new agreement have been settled and only the formal completion of the paperwork remains. The report indicates that Dortmund expect the deal to be concluded during October.

Kovac’s position has strengthened considerably since he took charge. He arrived in February 2025 with Dortmund in a difficult position and subsequently guided the team to fourth place in the Bundesliga, securing Champions League qualification.

The Croatian has also developed a close working relationship with Ricken, who wanted his own long-term future at the club resolved before Kovac committed himself to a further spell in Dortmund.

That link between the coach and the sporting leadership is now set to continue. Dortmund have moved to keep the core of their decision-making structure together rather than allowing a series of contracts to expire at different times.

The timing also reflects the team’s strong start to the current campaign. Dortmund have opened the season with an unbeaten run and are currently leading the Bundesliga, while their progress has also continued in cup and European competition.

The planned agreement also follows a run of decisions aimed at keeping the club’s football leadership together. Dortmund have already extended Cramer, Ricken and Treß, and Kovac’s renewal would bring the head coach into the same long-term framework.

Bild says the remaining step is administrative, with the formal announcement expected once the signatures are in place.
