Bayern Munich confirm Kompany diagnosis after hospital discharge

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital after collapsing at training, with doctors identifying meningeal irritation as the cause.

The 40-year-old Belgian will continue his recovery at home, but Bayern have not set a date for his return to the touchline, stressing that he must first receive medical clearance.

Kompany was taken to hospital last Friday after collapsing while watching a training session involving Bayern’s reserve team. He had been unwell with a viral infection in the days before the incident and had missed some training duties, although he was on the touchline for the Champions League draw against Arsenal earlier in the week.

Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl confirmed the latest development to German broadcaster ARD ahead of the club’s German Cup tie against Magdeburg.

“Given the circumstances, he’s doing well,” Eberl said. “He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us.”

Eberl also explained what doctors had established about the incident.

“It’s a meningeal irritation that caused this incident on Friday. He will now rest and take medication, and I am certain that he will very soon be back on the touchline, operating at 100 per cent.”

Meningeal irritation involves inflammation or irritation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Bayern have not provided further details about the severity of Kompany’s condition, and the club has made clear that his recovery must take priority over football.

No return date for Kompany

Assistant coach Aaron Danks has taken responsibility for the first team while Kompany recovers, overseeing Bayern’s 3-1 Bundesliga victory at Freiburg on Sunday and their subsequent German Cup match.

Danks said the manager’s discharge was an encouraging step, but cautioned against expecting an immediate return.

“There is no timeline on it,” Danks said, according to Sky Sports. “It’s obviously a really positive step in his road to recovery. He gets to settle back at home now, be closer to his family, be closer to his home comforts, but it’s still really important that he takes his rest and he recovers.”

He added that the medical team would determine when Kompany could resume work.

“Our doctors will continue to work closely with Vince and at the right moment, he will be back with us once he is fit and healthy to do that.”

Kane offers an encouraging update

Harry Kane also spoke to Kompany shortly before receiving his Ballon d’Or award and said the manager had sounded positive about his recovery.

“He actually phoned me, phoned me bright and early at 9am,” Kane said. “I asked him how he was doing, he said he feels good, he feels like he’s on the mend.”

The England captain acknowledged that Kompany would be eager to return, but emphasised the importance of allowing him time to recover.

“I know he’s the type of character who just wants to be back with the team already. He wants to be out on the training field with us, on the bench with us. But it’s important that he rests.”

Kane added that the coaching staff and players would support one another during the manager’s absence, describing the award as something shared with the club.

Bayern remain top of the Bundesliga and face Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, with Danks expected to continue leading the team. The positive news is that Kompany has left hospital and the cause of his collapse has been identified; the timing of his return, however, remains in the hands of his doctors.
