The decision was confirmed by Marca and subsequently by Fabrizio Romano. Barcelona held a £26 million purchase option on Rashford as part of his loan agreement, negotiated at the start of the 2025-26 season. That option expired on June 15, and the club chose not to activate it.
Rashford spent the season at the Spotify Camp Nou, scoring 14 goals and adding 14 assists in 26 starts across LaLiga and the Copa del Rey as Barcelona won the title and the Spanish Super Cup under head coach Hansi Flick. He had hoped to stay and had agreed personal terms on a reduced-salary permanent deal. The feeling was not mutual.
According to Marca, the decision came down to three factors. Barcelona signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United for £70 million, choosing a younger player who offers greater defensive contribution in the wide positions. Gordon, 25, is also three years younger than Rashford, who turns 29 in October. The annual cost of maintaining both players' wages was assessed as prohibitive.
Shortly after the news broke, Rashford removed all references to Barcelona from his social media profiles.
Bayern Munich have moved with speed. Christian Falk of BILD reporting the Bavarian club are prepared to pay Manchester United their full asking price of £34.5 million — a figure that satisfies United's valuation and could accelerate a deal. Bayern had missed out on Gordon and have been frustrated in attempts to sign Liverpool academy graduate Rio Ngumoha. Rashford now represents their most viable wide option.
Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa — where Rashford spent the second half of last season on loan prior to his Barcelona move — are all understood to hold interest in a return to the Premier League.
Real Madrid and Chelsea have also been mentioned as potential suitors.
Rashford's wages — reported at £315,000 per week — represent the most significant obstacle to any deal, regardless of destination. United are prepared to contribute to a portion of the salary to facilitate a transfer, according to reports.
He is currently focused on England's World Cup campaign and has said nothing publicly about his next club. United, for their part, are simply relieved the situation has reached a resolution, however it lands.
