Barcelona have completed the signing of Jony Hernández Jones, snapping up the latest gem to emerge from Tenerife's academy in a deal wrapped up on Monday.

The 18-year-old winger will join Barça Atlètic, with the club hopeful he can eventually follow the well-worn path from the reserves into Hansi Flick's first-team squad.

The move came together at remarkable speed, driven by the close relationship between Tenerife's majority shareholder, Rayco García, and Barça president Joan Laporta, whose rapport proved decisive in sealing the agreement. Jony has put pen to paper on a long-term deal running until June 2030.

Barcelona will pay a fixed €500,000 for the winger, while Tenerife have negotiated a 25% cut of any future sale. According to Cope Tenerife, the contract also includes performance-related add-ons that could push the final fee higher still.

Tenerife's sporting director, Manu Guill, called it "a source of pride" to see academy graduates move on for a significant fee. Fellow youth product Juan Ybarra has also completed a switch to Barcelona as part of the same wave of departures.

There is even a chance the strong ties between the two clubs open the door to further business this summer. Tenerife, who are heading back to Segunda Division, are on the hunt for reliable reinforcements for Álvaro Cervera's rebuild, and one of La Masia's brighter prospects could yet head the other way to gain senior experience at the Heliodoro.

The wager on Jony revives a formula that has served Barcelona well before, with Canary Islands talent enjoying a strong history at Camp Nou. Pedro Rodríguez was part of Pep Guardiola's famous sextuple-winning side, while fellow Tenerife native Pedri later emerged from the archipelago to become a driving force in Barça's midfield.

Jony himself is a livewire on the pitch. Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and raised in the same Arguineguín academy that produced Juan Carlos Valerón and David Silva, he had a brief stint with Valencia's youth ranks before truly flourishing back at Tenerife.

His rise this season has been meteoric, progressing from the Juvenil side to Tenerife B in Segunda RFEF as recently as April, before forcing his way into Cervera's senior side for their final Primera RFEF fixture of the campaign.

A left-footed winger who thrives cutting in from the right, Jony offers electric unpredictability in one-on-ones, quick decision-making in transition, and a composed finish well beyond his years.
