According to Corriere dello Sport, talks over a new McTominay deal have been ongoing for some time, aimed at extending his contract to 2030, two years beyond its current expiry, with the possibility of a further one-year option also under discussion. Vergara already had his salary and contract length improved a few months ago, though the club now wants to push his deal beyond 2030 too. Amir Rrahmani's renewal is also close to being finalised.
The news comes as Napoli confirmed the departure of Juan Jesus, whose contract expired on 30 June and was not renewed. The Brazilian defender, now a free agent, reflected at length on his exit in an interview with Dazn.
"I think my farewell letter was the least I could do. I didn't want to do the usual thing everyone does, like a video or a post. I wanted to thank Napoli in a different way: I lived five wonderful years, despite one difficult season. But even that made us grow and mature, as young men and as footballers.
"I wrote down everything I experienced. I could have gone on longer, because I lived through emotions I'll remember for the rest of my life," Juan Jesus said.
Asked about the prospect of Antonio Conte becoming the next Italy manager, Juan Jesus was full of praise for his former coach.
"I had the boss for two years. For what he gives you mentally and competitively, he's a coach who transmits something extra. After a very difficult year, within a few months he made us understand how to work.
"He's someone who works to win, he has his own method, whether you like it or not. Speaking for myself, I got on brilliantly with him. He gave me so much, I've reached 35 physically able to play at a high level for another three years. He made me grow physically and mentally. I think the Italian national team suits him very well and could pull the group out of this dark moment. It's a problem that Italy aren't at the World Cup, one that needs fixing as soon as possible."
On his own future, he said he was in no rush.
"For now I'm on holiday. I'd like to play three more years at a high level. I have offers from Brazil, but it's almost impossible. I grew up here, I have my partner and my children, I have a life in Italy.
"In Brazil I have my family, my mother, my nieces and nephews and my brothers, but Italy is home. I'm enjoying my holiday and then we'll see, I don't know yet what my future holds."
