According to Italian outlet Sportitalia, the Bundesliga clubs have held discussions about the 28-year-old, whose contract with Spartak is approaching its end. The Russian goalkeeper could become available on a free transfer in summer 2027 if he does not agree a new deal.
Maksimenko is said to be interested in moving to one of Europe’s leading leagues. Although Bundesliga interest has emerged, the report says he would prefer a move to Italy, where Serie A club Monza previously made initial enquiries.
The possibility of both German clubs looking at new goalkeepers also reflects the need to plan ahead, even if their current first choices remain in place. Augsburg have Finn Dahmen under contract until 2027, while Werder Bremen’s Karl Hein is tied to his club until 2030.
There is no indication that either club has decided to replace its current goalkeeper. However, identifying potential options early would give them greater flexibility if another team makes an approach for Dahmen or Hein, or if circumstances change before the next transfer window.
Maksimenko has spent his career with Spartak’s system and established himself as the Moscow club’s first-choice goalkeeper. He has made 244 competitive appearances for the Russian side, keeping 78 clean sheets, according to the figures cited in the report.
His experience and potential availability without a transfer fee could make him an attractive option for clubs assessing the market. The key question, however, may be whether a Bundesliga move appeals to the player as much as a switch to Italy.
Sportitalia reported that Monza had explored the possibility of signing Maksimenko during the previous summer transfer window, before the current round of interest from Germany emerged.
No agreement with Augsburg or Werder Bremen has been announced. With the goalkeeper still under contract at Spartak, any move will depend on his decision over his future and the progress of discussions in the coming months.
