Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says his recovery from meniscus surgery is progressing well, but the Deportivo striker is determined not to rush his return to action.

The Gabon international has stopped using crutches and begun working on an exercise bike after undergoing surgery on his knee. He remains without a confirmed return date, with his progress and reaction to running expected to determine when he can resume training on the pitch.

Aubameyang received Deportivo's award for the club's best player in September, a recognition that carried particular meaning because of the affection he has received since arriving in A Coruña.

“I am very happy. I have received many awards in my career, but this one is special because of the affection of the people of La Coruña,” he said.

The forward was injured during Deportivo's match against Real Betis, when he attempted to keep the ball in play. He immediately realised something was wrong when he landed.

“I wanted to save a ball, lifted my leg and, when I landed, I already felt that something was wrong,” Aubameyang explained.

He admitted that the enforced absence had affected him mentally, particularly because he had rarely experienced a significant injury during his career. The arrival of his brothers from Italy helped him through the initial period, and he is now focused on returning to action.

“It was mentally difficult at first, but my brothers came from Italy and now I cannot wait to return,” he said.

Aubameyang has also been surprised by the number and variety of injuries affecting his teammates, including clavicle and wrist problems suffered by Casadó and Eddahchouri.

“My knee injury is more common, but the others are not. It is very strange to have clavicle and wrist injuries,” he said, adding that the international break had given the squad an opportunity to regroup.

Deportivo face Real Sociedad in San Sebastián, a match Aubameyang will miss. He nevertheless believes his teammates have enough quality to secure the points.

“I trust them a lot. There is a lot of quality and they can win,” he said.

He also offered encouragement to fellow forward Nsongo, joking that his teammate was worth two strikers and should not feel pressured by the responsibility of leading the attack alone.

Aubameyang is looking forward to returning to the pitch — and to celebrating with his trademark acrobatic flips.

“With my new knee, I have to recover first, and then there will be more flips,” he said.
