The Magpies are understood to have lost 1-0 to the Championship side at the KNOX training ground, with the fixture providing valuable preparation ahead of Monday's Premier League trip to Coventry City.
Club captain Dan Burn, Joelinton and Nico González were among the senior players working towards a return from injury. Newcastle have been without several first-team regulars during the opening weeks of the campaign, making the international break an opportunity to improve their availability.
Joelinton has yet to feature in the Premier League this season because of an ongoing muscle problem, but the Brazilian midfielder has returned to training and is making progress.
Jaissle is keen to have the 30-year-old available again, highlighting both his footballing ability and his leadership.
“He has qualities, on the ball and out of possession. He is a leader, his body language shows that,” the Newcastle head coach said.
“We need warriors in the team; we are really happy to have him back training with us.”
The friendly also offered opportunities for younger players, with Jaissle confirming that Newcastle had arranged another game during the break.
“We had one last week and used that for a few guys who were here but also for the young lads from the Academy, which was good,” he said.
Newcastle are hoping to welcome back three or four players from the nine who missed their previous match against Hull City, which they won 2-1.
Lewis Miley is expected to have recovered from a knock, while Burn is working his way back from an ankle injury. Jaissle will also assess Amar Dedic and Jacob Ramsey, who have thigh problems, and William Osula, who has been dealing with a foot injury.
Tino Livramento and Anthony Elanga remain among the players managing muscle problems.
Jaissle said some members of the squad had been given an additional day off following the international break, with the full group expected to train together before the Coventry fixture.
“Joey is progressing well; he is doing better. We need to be smart in our load management,” he added.
Newcastle United will use the remaining preparation time to determine which players are ready to return, with the coach mindful that recovering from injury does not automatically mean being fit to start.
