Aurélien Tchouaméni has admitted that he played through a groin injury during the 2026 World Cup, accepting physical risks because he wanted to help France despite not being at his best.

The Real Madrid midfielder said the injury affected his performances during the tournament, including the semi-final against Spain, which attracted criticism. He believes the player supporters saw was not a true reflection of his ability because he was struggling physically.

“That was not the real Aurélien Tchouaméni,” he told France 24, explaining that he had continued playing after discussing the situation with the medical staff.

“I took risks that perhaps I would not have taken at another time, but that is how things are. I have no regrets.”

Tchouaméni used the international break to focus on recovering fully from the problem, having missed France’s latest squad selection under coach Zinedine Zidane. His priority is now to return to peak condition and contribute consistently for Madrid.

The 26-year-old also acknowledged the expectations that come with playing for the Spanish club, where performances are judged against the highest standards.

“Real Madrid are the biggest club in the world for a reason. There is always pressure, and we know we have to perform,” he said.

Madrid have gone through a difficult period without adding a major trophy, increasing the demand for improvement this season. Tchouaméni knows that the club’s reputation brings constant scrutiny, but he remains focused on helping the team meet its ambitions.

Away from football, the midfielder offered a glimpse of his interests beyond the pitch. He revealed that he once considered becoming a trader, inspired by a godfather who worked in the profession.

“I had a godfather who was a trader, and I thought it seemed very elegant. In reality, I was quite bad at maths,” he said.

Tchouaméni also gave his view on the Ballon d’Or debate, arguing that the award should go to a French player. He identified Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise among his preferred candidates.

He praised Mbappé’s exceptional season and highlighted Dembélé’s Champions League success with Paris Saint-Germain, while also pointing to Olise’s performances.

The comments underline Tchouaméni’s confidence in French football’s leading talents, even as he concentrates on rebuilding his own form after a physically demanding tournament.
