Agustín Giay’s rise at Palmeiras is beginning to translate into a more prominent role with Argentina, with the 22-year-old emerging as a serious option at right-back for Lionel Scaloni.

The defender started all three matches during Argentina’s latest international window, convincing the coaching staff as they continue to assess their options on the right side of the defence.

Giay has also made an impression in Brazil. He scored twice in Palmeiras’ 4-1 derby victory over Corinthians, producing one of his most influential performances since joining the club from San Lorenzo.

His attacking qualities are a significant part of his appeal. Quick to overlap, capable of delivering crosses and willing to make forward runs, Giay offers the kind of adventurous full-back play associated with Brazil’s modern defenders.

His recent form has also attracted attention from Europe. Atlético Madrid, AC Milan and Napoli have previously shown interest, while Como made enquiries during the summer. According to Italian transfer journalist Matteo Moretto, several leading clubs continue to monitor the Argentine and could consider a move during the January window.

Palmeiras, however, are in a strong negotiating position. Giay’s contract runs until December 2030, and the Brazilian club are reportedly looking for a fee in the region of €20 million to €25 million before considering a sale.

Palmeiras invested $7.5 million to acquire 75 per cent of the player’s registration from San Lorenzo and have also placed a $100 million release clause in his contract. Those figures underline the club’s determination to protect the value of a player who has become increasingly important.

Giay’s development has gathered momentum across both club and international football. His recent performances have strengthened his claim to a regular place in Argentina’s plans, while his attacking contribution at Palmeiras has helped draw fresh attention from potential European suitors.

A January move is not guaranteed, particularly given Palmeiras’ contractual leverage. But with his profile rising and several clubs monitoring his progress, Giay is increasingly becoming a name to watch ahead of the next transfer window.
