AC Milan have confirmed a deal worth up to €70m for a player who spent barely a year in Ligue 1.

Belgium international Diego Moreira has signed for the club on a permanent transfer from Strasbourg, putting pen to paper on a contract running until 30 June 2031 and taking the number 22 shirt.

The fee is reported between €65m and €70m including add-ons, one of the more eye-catching outlays of Milan's summer window.

Born in Liège on 6 August 2004, Moreira came through the youth ranks at Standard Liège before completing his development at Benfica, where he won the UEFA Youth League with the Under-19s in 2021-22 and the Under-20 Intercontinental Cup shortly after, as well as making his Champions League debut in the qualifying rounds of the 2022-23 edition.

His path to Milan has taken in several stops since. Moreira joined Chelsea in the summer of 2023, making his first-team debut in a Carabao Cup tie against Wimbledon that August, before a season-long loan at Olympique Lyonnais in 2023-24.

He moved permanently to Strasbourg in the summer of 2024, where he established himself as one of the more exciting young talents in French football, combining pace, technical quality and tactical versatility. Eligible for Portugal at youth level, including a 2023 European Under-21 Championship appearance, Moreira has represented Belgium's senior side since 2025, making his debut in FIFA World Cup qualifying and going on to feature at the tournament itself this summer.

"I'm excited and also a little in disbelief, because when you talk about Milan you're talking about titles, history and all the great champions who have played here," Moreira said.

"It's a huge club — you know what's expected of you, and I believe this is the right moment to arrive here.

"It's really important to me that people understand I'm someone who likes to joke around, but who is also extremely focused and gives everything on the pitch for my team-mates, the fans and the club.

"That will never change, because it's been part of who I am since I was a kid."

AC Milan's official statement extended a warm welcome to the 22-year-old and wished him success both personally and with the club going forward.
