Granit Xhaka has dismissed speculation linking him with a move to Beşiktaş and made clear he has no intention of leaving Sunderland, describing his family's contentment on Wearside as the decisive factor in his thinking.

The 33-year-old Switzerland captain, who joined Sunderland from Bayer Leverkusen for £17m last summer, has just completed a remarkable debut season in which he helped the promoted club secure Europa League qualification for the first time in their history.

Reports in Turkey had suggested Beşiktaş were preparing an approach for the experienced midfielder, but Xhaka was unequivocal when asked about his future ahead of Switzerland's World Cup campaign.

"For me, the most important thing is that my family is happy. And we are happy in Sunderland."

He was equally direct about any suggestion of personal ambition overriding that contentment.

"I'm not giving a transfer a second thought. I'm really glad to finally have a summer where there's no speculation about my future. That's rarely been the case in recent years."

With Switzerland at the World Cup, Xhaka is now focused entirely on the international stage. Making his fourth appearance at the tournament, he spoke about what this competition means to him personally.

"I want to become world champion. One is allowed to dream of that, because in football, anything is possible. At a tournament, a lot of things have to align — even off the pitch."

For Sunderland, Xhaka's confirmation that he intends to stay is significant. His leadership and experience were central to the club's overperformance last season, and losing him to a Turkish club before their first European campaign in decades would have been a damaging blow heading into a summer of considerable ambition.
