The 24-year-old Germany international joined Newcastle United from VfB Stuttgart in the summer of 2025 for β¬75 million and made 33 Premier League appearances, scoring eight goals and contributing three assists. He also added one goal and one assist in the Champions League. The numbers are not poor. The story they hide is.
Woltemade's opening months at St James' Park were exceptional β quick adaptation, regular goals and a physical presence that confirmed why Newcastle had paid the fee. The second half of the season was considerably more difficult, as he was moved away from a central striking role into wider or deeper positions.
He explained the problem directly in an interview with Stern magazine.
"When I don't play in attack, it's much harder for me to get into goal-threatening spaces."
The expectation placed on him also caught him off guard.
"In every game, a goal or an assist is expected of me. The extent of the criticism really surprised me. But I no longer let things that can be a burden get to me as much."
He is nonetheless clear-eyed about the disappointment of the season's second half.
"Of course I'm not satisfied with how the last few months went sportively β especially because my start in Newcastle was so strong. That raised expectations, including my own."
Despite that, he is unequivocal about where his future lies.
"I moved to the Premier League, the best league in the world, at 23. I've learned a lot this season. I've improved athletically, I can keep up with the enormous pace and hold my own in duels. Overall it was a step forward. That's why I have no doubts about Newcastle. I will break through there."
However, Bild reports that Woltemade's contentment has limits. He is understood to be frustrated by his lack of consistent central striking opportunities and has indicated internally that if his role does not change, he would be open to reassessing his future β even if that does not mean leaving imminently.
Interest has been reported from Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid and Aston Villa. Contact has not yet been made, according to Bild, and his contract runs until 2031. A departure involving a club that paid β¬75 million less than a year ago would be a complex and expensive operation for any potential suitor.
Woltemade wants to stay. But he wants a different role.
