Wigan sign Chelsea starlet Reggie Walsh: I need to play

Wigan Athletic

Wigan Athletic have signed highly-rated Chelsea midfielder Reggie Walsh on a season-long loan ahead of the 2026-27 Sky Bet League One campaign.

The 17-year-old arrives at the Brick Community Stadium as one of the most exciting young talents in Chelsea's academy, having already made his senior debut for the Premier League club and gained experience in both the Uefa Conference League and Uefa Champions League.

A dynamic midfielder, Walsh has progressed through Chelsea's academy since joining at the age of seven, earning international recognition with England at youth level while continuing to impress through the age groups at Cobham.

His rapid rise saw him make his Chelsea first-team debut as a 16-year-old against Djurgården in the Uefa Conference League, becoming the third-youngest player in the club's history to feature for the senior side. Having come through the youth system at Chelsea, Walsh has already had the opportunity to train and travel with the Premier League first-team squad, experiences that have given him an insight into the demands and standards of senior football.

Speaking to Latics TV after completing his loan move, Walsh expressed his delight.

"First of all, it's a privilege to be here," he said. "It's a massive club with a lot of history, so I can't wait to get started. It's the perfect stepping stone I need in my career.

"Being 17, I need to play men's football, and I believe this is the perfect environment for me to be in and build my career to get to where I want to be.

"There have been a lot of ups and downs to this moment, as there is in any stage of life, but it's been good, and I've really enjoyed my journey so far. Every experience brings something new and something that you have to learn. When you're with the first team, you're playing in high-stakes and high-level games, and going away with the first team at Chelsea to get minutes under my belt and build up to where I want to be for this start was really good."

Now, with the opportunity to take those lessons into a new environment, Walsh is determined to make the most of his move to Wigan and continue progressing towards his long-term ambitions, joining a club that previously helped develop current Chelsea captain Reece James during his own loan spell there.
