Werder Bremen want to keep Niclas Füllkrug beyond the end of his loan from West Ham, with the striker also open to extending his stay.

The 33-year-old has made an immediate impact since returning to the Bundesliga club, scoring 12 goals in his first 10 competitive appearances. Nine of those have come in the league, where he currently leads the Bundesliga scoring chart.

His form has helped Bremen climb to fifth in the table and strengthened the club’s desire to turn his temporary return into a permanent arrangement.

Sporting director Clemens Fritz has made clear that Werder would like to retain the Germany international beyond the current season.

“We would very much like to continue with Niclas beyond the summer,” Fritz told DeichStube.

He also believes Füllkrug is receptive to the idea of staying at the club where he previously enjoyed some of the best years of his career.

“I know that he can also imagine that very well,” Fritz said.

The possibility of a longer stay was discussed before Füllkrug returned to Werder Bremen on loan from West Ham in August. Fritz confirmed that the prospect of continuing together had already formed part of their conversations.

The pair have known each other for many years, having been involved together at Werder during the 2012-13 season. Fritz said their relationship remains close.

However, any permanent move will require West Ham’s agreement. Füllkrug’s loan runs until the end of the 2026-27 campaign, while his contract with the English club expires in 2028.

Fritz recognises that Bremen cannot decide the striker’s future alone.

“We know, of course, that a third party has a say and that football is very dynamic,” he said.

West Ham will therefore have an important role in any negotiations, while Füllkrug’s continued goalscoring form could also attract interest from elsewhere and influence the financial terms of a deal.

For now, Bremen have made their preference clear. They want Füllkrug to remain at the Weserstadion beyond the end of his loan, and the striker is understood to be open to that prospect.
