The Brazilian tried everything to find the net at the Martínez Valero but again showed a wastefulness that left even his own teammates on the bench with their heads in their hands. In the first half, played through one-on-one with goalkeeper Matías Dituro, Vinícius opted to try a delicate finish with the outside of his boot and sent the ball well wide, ignoring a well-placed Arda Güler to his side.
He spurned another clear opening in the second half after Güler set him away on a good transition, firing off target once more before being substituted with half an hour still to play as José Mourinho began to think ahead to Sunday's derby against Atlético Madrid.
Vinícius has now scored just once in Real Madrid's opening six matches of the season, and took to social media after the final whistle to address his form directly.
"The goals will come back, I can't keep missing so much," he wrote.
Even Mourinho had flagged the issue before kick-off, telling reporters in his pre-match press conference: "He's lacking goals."
Speaking again after the match, the head coach praised Vinícius's overall effort while making clear what he wants to see more of.
"His best version is scoring. Assisting is important, working for the team is very important, the daily work is important and he does it very well," Mourinho said. "But there's another Vinícius. The Vinícius who eliminated Benfica last season, who in tight matches finishes you off - one chance, one goal, game over. He's missing that top-level performance."
Vinícius has managed just one goal and three assists across Real Madrid's six matches so far this season in LaLiga and the Champions League, a marked contrast to the free-scoring form of Kylian Mbappé and the emerging influence of Güler in Mourinho's side.
The winger, who signed a new contract extension over the summer, has also faced whistles from sections of Real Madrid's own support during recent home matches, adding further pressure to a run he will hope to end against Atlético at the weekend.
