Venezia have sacked Giovanni Stroppa after losing their opening six Serie A matches, ending the reign of the manager who led the club back into Italy’s top flight last season.

The decision was confirmed on Tuesday, following Monday’s 3-1 defeat away to Atalanta. Venezia remain without a point after six league games, a disastrous start that has proved decisive despite Stroppa’s success in securing promotion.

The club announced the dismissal in an official statement, while acknowledging the manager’s contribution to their return to Serie A.

“Venezia FC announces that Giovanni Stroppa has been relieved of his duties as Head Coach of the First Team,” the statement read.

“Under his leadership, the Club secured promotion to Serie A in the 2025/26 season, finishing a Serie BKT campaign in which it played a leading role.”

Venezia also thanked Stroppa and his staff for their work during their time at the club, highlighting their professionalism, dedication and commitment.

The decision marks a sharp reversal for a coach who had only recently been rewarded with a contract extension. In July, Venezia announced that Stroppa had signed a new deal running until June 2029, with provision for a further season if certain conditions were met.

His team’s performances in the opening weeks of the campaign, however, failed to translate into results. Six defeats left Venezia rooted to the foot of the table, with the loss at Atalanta bringing the situation to a head.

Stroppa had arrived in Venice in the summer of 2025 and delivered an immediate return to Serie A, guiding the club to first place in Serie B. That achievement had raised expectations that Venezia could establish themselves back in the top division, but the opening run of losses left the club facing an early battle to avoid relegation.

Attention now turns to the search for a successor, with Venezia needing a rapid response as the season continues.

Their next assignment is a home match against Napoli on Saturday, giving the incoming coach little time to prepare the team for another demanding test.
