Osasuna have dismissed Luis Miguel Ramis and brought back Jagoba Arrasate as head coach, hoping the return of a familiar figure can reverse the club’s troubled start to the season.

Arrasate has agreed a contract until 30 June 2029, beginning a second spell in charge of the Navarre-based side. His appointment follows the club’s decision to end Ramis’s tenure after a run of five league matches without a victory.

The 5-2 defeat against Real Betis proved the final blow for Ramis, who arrived from Burgos in the summer. Osasuna had taken only one point from their previous five matches, recording four defeats and a draw, and were sitting 16th in the table.

The club confirmed that Ramis’s coaching staff would also leave, bringing an abrupt end to the project that began when he was appointed in June.

Arrasate returns with a substantial record at Osasuna. He previously managed the team from 2018 to 2024, taking charge of 256 matches and becoming the second-most experienced coach in the club’s history.

His first spell included promotion to LaLiga, five consecutive seasons of top-flight survival and a run to the 2023 Copa del Rey final. Osasuna also qualified for European competition during his tenure, helping establish a period of relative stability and progress.

The club will hope those achievements can be repeated as it attempts to move away from the relegation battle. Osasuna have struggled defensively in recent weeks, with heavy defeats against Betis, Alaves and Atletico Madrid exposing the scale of the challenge facing the new coach.

Arrasate will be accompanied by Bittor Alkiza, who returns as his assistant. The club said further details about the coaching staff would be announced later.

The new head coach is scheduled to be presented at El Sadar on Tuesday before taking his first training session on Wednesday. His immediate task will be to restore confidence, tighten a defence that has conceded heavily and help Osasuna turn competitive performances into points.

Arrasate’s familiarity with the club and its supporters offers a clear contrast with the short-lived Ramis appointment. However, the pressure will be immediate: Osasuna need results quickly to prevent their difficult start from becoming a prolonged fight for survival.
