Clarence Seedorf has returned to management after seven years away, signing a contract with Brazilian club Corinthians that runs until the end of 2027.

The 50-year-old former Netherlands international takes charge of the SĂŁo Paulo club following the departure of Fernando Diniz, with Corinthians hoping his experience and leadership can help the team through a difficult period in the Brazilian Championship.

Seedorf made clear that he understood the responsibility attached to the appointment.

“Accepting this challenge is an honour, but also a great responsibility. I am here to give everything I have and build a team that fights for every ball, every minute and every victory,” he said.

Club president Osmar Stabile welcomed the appointment, expressing confidence in the former midfielder’s professional qualities and the contribution he could make alongside his coaching staff.

“It is a great joy to have a professional of Seedorf’s calibre. We made our choice based on the working profile we envisage for Corinthians, and I am sure that he and his technical staff will help us overcome this more delicate moment in the Brazilian Championship,” Stabile said.

Sporting director Marcelo Paz also highlighted the effort required to complete the deal, pointing to Seedorf’s distinguished playing career and previous experience in Brazil.

“There was a great effort from everyone to conclude this negotiation. Seedorf is a highly qualified professional, a multi-title-winning player who has built a solid career,” Paz said.

“He has already played in the Brazilian league, which was a decisive factor in our choice. We had excellent conversations and will begin this collaboration in the best possible way.”

Seedorf’s managerial career began at AC Milan in 2014, where he spent six months in charge after retiring from professional football. He subsequently coached Chinese club Shenzhen FC, Spanish side Deportivo La Coruña and the Cameroon national team, before taking charge of Iranian club Esteghlal.

He also held a role on the Dutch national team’s management committee.

His appointment represents another opportunity to establish himself as a coach after a lengthy spell away from the dugout. Corinthians will be hoping that the experience and winning mentality he developed during a decorated playing career can translate into results on the touchline.
