Sporting director Simon Rolfes played down the severity of the latest problem after Leverkusen’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Mainz, suggesting the 21-year-old would not be sidelined for long.
“He will not be out for long. This is not a serious injury, but it is obviously frustrating because the problems have continued for him. We hope this will be the last injury,” Rolfes said.
The comments underline the club’s frustration at Ben Seghir’s repeated fitness issues. Leverkusen signed the attacking midfielder from Monaco in 2025 for a reported €32 million, but he has yet to make the impact expected following his arrival.
In 16 appearances for the German side, Ben Seghir has not registered a goal or an assist, according to the figures reported in Germany. His technical ability and attacking potential made him an attractive signing, but regular availability has become an immediate concern.
Head coach Carles Martínez has also urged the player to take greater care of his body and manage the physical demands of professional football more effectively.
“Eli wants to play and help the team. But he has to learn to deal with his body better and manage it,” Martínez said.
The message is not that Leverkusen have given up on the youngster. Rather, the club need him to overcome the recurring problems and build the consistency required to fulfil his potential.
Ben Seghir has already established himself as a Morocco international, earning 20 caps, and arrived in Germany with experience from Monaco’s first team. Leverkusen will hope that a spell of uninterrupted training can help him translate those qualities into performances in the Bundesliga.
For now, Rolfes’ assessment offers some reassurance that the latest injury is not expected to keep the forward out for an extended period. However, the club’s priority will be ensuring that his return does not lead to another setback.
