Thomas Tuchel has urged England supporters to put their criticism of Ben White behind them, insisting the Arsenal defender deserves a fresh start.

White has been recalled to the England squad for the November international fixtures after missing the previous camp, but his return to Wembley could again attract attention from supporters who have not forgiven him for leaving the 2022 World Cup in Qatar part-way through the tournament.

The Arsenal defender was booed when he returned to international football in March, with sections of the crowd making their feelings clear during the friendly against Uruguay. White scored England's goal in the 1-1 draw but also conceded the penalty from which the visitors equalised.

Tuchel believes the reaction has gone far enough and wants supporters to judge the player on what he contributes to the national team now.

β€œWe were not happy about it [the booing],” the England manager said.

β€œWe understand the disappointment of the fans but it's been expressed now and it should be a closed book. Everybody can see the investment of Ben and the quality of Ben in terms of how he presented himself when he was with us.”

White's departure from the Qatar World Cup followed a difference of opinion with assistant coach Steve Holland. He subsequently remained unavailable for selection throughout the remainder of Gareth Southgate's tenure, before returning under Tuchel earlier this year.

His absence from England lasted four years, with his previous appearance before the March fixtures coming in March 2022, when Southgate was still in charge.

Tuchel acknowledged that the circumstances surrounding White's international return had been difficult, but believes the defender has shown the commitment required to move forward.

β€œIt was very eventful for him and not so easy,” he said.

β€œBut when I spoke to him I could see the hunger. He deserves to be able to open a new chapter and he deserves positive feedback from the crowd.”

White could be involved when England host Croatia at Wembley on November 12, giving supporters another opportunity to show their response to his recall.

Tuchel has made clear that he wants the focus to be on the player's performances rather than the events of four years ago. Having brought White back into the squad, the manager is now asking the crowd to give him the chance to rebuild his relationship with the England supporters.
