Tottenham target Arthur Dias has taken another major step in his rise after making his senior Brazil debut at 19, months after Spurs tried to sign him.

The Athletico Paranaense defender came off the bench in Brazil’s 4-2 victory over Australia, giving Tottenham another reason to monitor a player they tried to sign during the summer.

Carlo Ancelotti introduced Dias in the 86th minute, replacing Mauro Júnior, and the youngster played on the left side of Brazil’s defence.

Although he had only a few minutes to make an impression, the appearance was significant because it made Dias a senior international.

“Happy with my debut wearing the Brazilian national team shirt. Even happier with the team’s victory,” Dias posted after the match.

The defender has made 32 appearances for Athletico this season and has also scored his first senior goal for the club.

His Brazil debut could also make a potential move to Tottenham easier from a work-permit perspective, although the friendly itself does not provide the same benefits as a competitive international appearance under the FA’s points-based system.

Brazil’s top division is currently classed as a Band 2 competition for Governing Body Endorsement purposes, while Dias’ workload for Athletico has also strengthened his case.

That combination appears likely to put him around or above the 15-point threshold required for an automatic endorsement, meaning a future Tottenham move should not be held up by permission to play in England.

Dias was already on Spurs’ radar before his Brazil call-up. Tottenham sent scouts to watch him in April before making a €21 million offer for 80 per cent of his rights during the summer.

Athletico rejected that proposal and were seeking closer to €30m, leaving Tottenham without the defender despite their willingness to make a substantial commitment.

The situation has since become more complicated for Spurs, with Barcelona also sending their head scout to watch Dias and Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Brentford reportedly showing interest.

Tottenham remain the English club with the clearest history of pursuing the defender, having already put a significant offer on the table.

Dias’ progress since then, however, means Athletico are unlikely to lower their demands.

His first Brazil cap has added another significant achievement to a breakthrough season, while his continued involvement at international level could further strengthen his position before the next transfer window.

For Tottenham, the task is now to decide whether to return with an improved proposal for a defender whose profile has grown considerably since their initial approach.
