Dominik Szoboszlai has been one of the few consistent bright spots for Liverpool over the past year, and the club is now moving to make sure his form translates into a lasting commitment, with a new long-term contract expected to be finalised soon.

Nothing has been signed yet, but months of negotiation between the two sides look set to reach a conclusion shortly, with Szoboszlai due to fly out with the rest of the squad to the United States on Monday for pre-season training.

Retaining Szoboszlai matters more than usual given how Liverpool have handled recent contract situations. Both Ibrahima Konate and Trent Alexander-Arnold were allowed to run their deals down and left for nothing in successive years, so getting an agreement over the line with one of the squad's most influential players sends a different signal about the club's priorities this time around.

Szoboszlai joined from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023 and played a significant role in Liverpool's Premier League title win in 2023-24.

He was not guaranteed a starting spot last season even after the club spent ยฃ116m to sign Florian Wirtz, yet the Hungarian raised his level and emerged as Liverpool's best midfielder regardless, deployed across multiple positions including as a number 10, winger, deep-lying midfielder and even at right-back. Across all of that versatility, he still finished the campaign with 13 goals and 12 assists.

Szoboszlai's Hungary side missed out on the World Cup after losing a play-off, a result that left the player visibly devastated at the time, but the upside for Liverpool is that he will be available for the entirety of pre-season under new head coach Andoni Iraola.

That is not the case for several other key names, with midfielder Alexis Mac Allister among those who will not join the squad until the start of the new season, given his involvement in the World Cup final with Argentina as they attempt to defend their title.

Mac Allister's absence, along with those of other international players, will hand extended pre-season opportunities to fringe squad members such as Curtis Jones and young midfielder Trey Nyoni during Liverpool's tour of Nashville, New York City and Chicago, where they face Sunderland, Wrexham and Leeds.
