Wojciech Szczesny has made clear he wants to remain at Barcelona next season, dismissing speculation about his future and joking that his compatriot Robert Lewandowski should follow his own example and retire.

The 35-year-old Polish goalkeeper spoke to Eleven Sports ahead of Sunday's El Clásico against Real Madrid, addressing a situation that has shifted considerably since he first emerged from retirement to join Barcelona as an emergency signing in the autumn of 2024, following Marc-André ter Stegen's serious knee injury.

With Joan García now established as first choice in his second season at the club, Szczesny has accepted a backup role with, by all accounts, complete composure. He remains contracted until the summer of 2027.

His intention could not be clearer.

"I'm old enough to understand that every year there might be speculation about whether I can still play, whether I still want to play. I still want to play, and I still can play — so I think we'll talk a couple more times after this Clásico."

He reflected on how his role at the club has evolved beyond playing, and how he has come to value the contribution he makes off the pitch.

"I realise that even when I'm not helping on the field, I have to find a way to help those who are playing."

On the importance of maintaining the dressing room environment, he was equally thoughtful.

"Often a good atmosphere helps. A smile, a little relief from the pressure, but also setting a good example in training. I feel the pressure to be at the level of the rest of the team. If that helps, all the better. And that is what I am doing."

When asked about Lewandowski — who is out of contract this summer and has been linked with a return to Juventus — Szczesny did not resist.

"If I were to advise him based on my experience, I would tell him to retire — because that is when the best offers come in."

Szczesny left Juventus in the summer of 2024 and retired, before Barcelona came calling two months later. The joke lands because it is true.
