The 18-year-old was introduced by Ecuador coach Marcelo Gallardo and played around 23 minutes, but still made an impression during his first appearance for the senior side.
Angulo had two shots, with one effort cleared off the line, completed every pass he attempted and recovered possession once in the final third.
“That was a beautiful moment for me. I fulfilled my dream of playing for my country,” Angulo said.
“Coach Gallardo gave me the opportunity. I called my family and they are very proud of me.”
The debut was particularly significant because of the shirt number Angulo was given. He wore No.13, the number previously associated with Ecuador's all-time leading scorer Enner Valencia.
Angulo admitted he had not known in advance that he would receive it.
“I honestly didn't know they were going to give me that number, but for me it was an honour to wear it. I'm proud to have that number.”
The Sunderland forward is already setting his sights beyond simply becoming a regular member of the Ecuador squad. He wants to develop into the country's leading striker.
“Yes, I'm preparing myself to bring joy to the country. I'm doing things in the best possible way for that, to be the striker for La Tri,” he said.
Angulo joined Sunderland from Independiente del Valle this year and is now adjusting to life at both club and international level. The teenager has also had to deal with the demands of travelling across Asia with Ecuador, with the different time zones taking their toll.
His first senior appearance nevertheless gave him a taste of what could lie ahead.
“I had been dreaming about it, until finally that dream came true,” Angulo said.
The Sunderland youngster will remain with Ecuador for their next match on October 1 as he continues his first international experience.
