Granit Xhaka will be eligible for Switzerland again in November after the Swiss Football Association confirmed that he and Breel Embolo can return to the national squad following the covid certificate case.

The decision ends uncertainty over the pair’s international futures after both missed Switzerland’s four Nations League matches in September and October. Reuters reports that the association concluded their return was justified following the conclusion of legal proceedings and the sporting consequences they had already faced.

The Swiss FA said in a statement: “The SFA has conducted an in-depth analysis of both cases and has concluded that the players’ return is justifiable, following the conclusion of legal proceedings and taking into account the sporting consequences already endured—namely, missing four international matches in September and October.”

Xhaka will also remain Switzerland captain. The association said the decision was made unanimously by head coach Murat Yakin and the technical staff, in consultation with the players’ council.

The Sunderland midfielder previously acknowledged obtaining a vaccination certificate instead of resolving his concerns through the proper channels. In a statement shared on Instagram, he explained his thinking at the time and accepted responsibility for the decision.

“In recent days, there has been much reporting about a matter from my past,” Xhaka said.

“I would like to address this personally. Regarding the Covid-19 vaccination, I was personally very uncertain and had serious concerns at the time. I felt a deep distrust of the vaccine and was plagued by fear and uncertainty.

“In this turbulent emotional state, I obtained a vaccination certificate instead of clarifying my open questions through the proper channels. Today I clearly see that this was the wrong approach. It was a mistake. I am sorry. I take responsibility for this decision, am committed to investigating the matter, and am fully cooperating with the relevant authorities.”

Xhaka and Embolo were each handed suspended fines of 150,000 Swiss francs, subject to a two-year probationary period, according to Reuters. Embolo, who plays for Atlanta United, was also unavailable for the previous international matches.

Switzerland are due to face Slovenia and Scotland in November as they complete their Nations League campaign. Xhaka’s return gives Yakin an experienced leader for the closing fixtures, while the association’s decision makes clear that the sanctions and missed matches were considered sufficient consequences.

The case has drawn significant attention in Switzerland, but the latest decision means both players are once again available for selection.
