Crystal Palace suffer another Ismaïla Sarr injury setback

Crystal Palace have been forced to manage Ismaïla Sarr’s fitness carefully after the winger experienced significant groin pain during his return to action against Beşiktaş in the Europa League.

The Senegal international came off the bench in Istanbul on Thursday, but he was absent from Palace’s squad for their Premier League meeting with Newcastle United on Sunday. Manager Pierre Sage subsequently explained that the club had decided against risking further aggravation of the problem.

“We tried to give him some minutes on Thursday, but he was really in pain with his groin again,” Sage told Sky Sports.

The manager said the decision was taken to withdraw the player from consideration and concentrate on his recovery rather than push him to continue playing through discomfort.

“Therefore, we chose to take him out and give him treatment, because we need him to be 100 per cent fit,” Sage said.

The setback is frustrating for Palace because Sarr had only recently returned to competitive action. His appearance against Beşiktaş offered an opportunity to build match fitness, but the recurrence of pain meant the club had to reassess his condition.

Sarr has struggled to establish a consistent run of appearances this season. The supplied report puts his playing time at just 122 minutes, underlining how limited his contribution has been while dealing with the problem.

Palace will want to avoid rushing him back before he is ready. The winger’s pace and ability to threaten defenders make him an important attacking option, but another premature return could prolong his absence.

Sage’s comments indicate that the immediate priority is getting Sarr back to full fitness rather than setting a firm return date. The club have not provided a confirmed timetable for his next appearance, leaving his availability for upcoming fixtures dependent on how he responds to treatment.

The timing is particularly awkward for Palace, who are balancing their domestic campaign with their Europa League commitments. Having Sarr available would give Sage another option in the wide areas, but the manager has made clear that the player must be fit enough to contribute properly.

For now, Palace will continue to monitor the groin issue and assess when the Senegalese winger can safely return. His latest setback means the club must remain patient as they seek to restore him to full fitness.
