It remains to be seen whether the club's hierarchy will place their trust in back-up goalkeeper Fabian Bredlow, 31, or move to sign an external replacement in response to the setback. A concrete transfer candidate has already emerged for the latter scenario.
According to Bild, VfB Stuttgart are looking at Radek Vitek, the 22-year-old Manchester United goalkeeper. The 1.98m Czech spent last season on loan at Bristol City, and United are willing to send him out on loan again, meaning any deal would carry little financial risk for Stuttgart.
The tabloid has also floated two well-known free agents as possible options: Stefan Ortega, 33, most recently of Nottingham Forest, and Orjan Nyland, 35, formerly of Sevilla. According to Kicker, the Norwegian, who impressed with strong performances at the World Cup, has genuinely been offered to Stuttgart, though he is not currently under serious consideration by the Swabian club. Ortega, meanwhile, is said by Bild to be seeking a club that can guarantee him a starting role, and has already turned down several offers in England as a result.
Stuttgart's priority is a short-term solution capable of stepping in immediately, one who would also be content with a place on the bench once Seimen returns from injury later in the autumn.
Seimen had been earmarked to inherit the No. 1 shirt following the departure of Alexander Nubel this summer, having impressed during a loan spell at SC Paderborn last season. His injury has come as a considerable blow to Stuttgart's sporting director, Fabian Wohlgemuth, who had considered the club's goalkeeping situation for the new campaign to be largely settled before the setback.
Bredlow remains a respected figure within the squad, having made 37 Bundesliga appearances for the club and often serving as first-choice for DFB Pokal fixtures, but there is a recognition internally that additional experienced cover may be needed given the demands of a full Bundesliga season.
Newly signed third-choice keeper Marius Funk, who arrived with Bundesliga experience from Greuther Furth, offers a further option, though he is not considered ready to be thrust into a starting role at this stage of his development.
