John Stones confirmed his departure from Manchester City in an emotional farewell video on Tuesday, breaking down in tears as he ends a decade that yielded 19 major trophies and transformed him into one of the defining defenders of his generation.

Stones, 31, joined from Everton in 2016 for ยฃ47.5 million and will leave as a free agent in June after making 293 appearances for the club. He was Pep Guardiola's second signing at the Etihad, and the relationship between player and manager became one of the defining partnerships of City's dominant era.

"It's been my home for the past 10 years and it'll be my home for the rest of my life," he said.

"I came as a kid and now I'm leaving as a man. Becoming a father, a husband, and on the pitch a very fulfilled player, living all my dreams and lifting all the things I came here to achieve. At the start of my career here I never would have thought I'd be in this position โ€” firstly to achieve everything but also to love the bond with everyone. Every dream has been smashed out of the park."

"If you said to me I'd be playing at City, winning everything, the fans singing my name wherever we go in the world, I don't think I would have believed you. The fans mean everything to me. I hope I have made them proud and they can relate to me as a person and a player โ€” how I have represented the club and will do for the rest of my life. This is my team forever and it always will be."

On Guardiola: "I don't think we would have been anywhere near as successful if it wasn't for him. The first time I met him, I left that moment and knew it was what I wanted to do and where I wanted to be โ€” playing under the best manager in the world. I'm so glad I was able to share so many incredible moments with him."

Stones leaves having won six Premier League titles, one Champions League, two FA Cups and five Carabao Cups.

He still has an opportunity to add a Premier League and FA Cup double this season. His contract expires on 30 June โ€” midway through the World Cup โ€” and elite clubs across Europe are understood to be monitoring his availability.
