Contract talks between Ajax and Sean Steur dragged on for months before his surprise switch to Newcastle, with his entourage, and his father Johan in particular, widely blamed for the breakdown in negotiations.
Several Ajax supporters, along with prominent pundits Johan Derksen and Henk Spaan, publicly criticised the elder Steur over his handling of the situation.
Speaking to NH Sport, Roy, a goalkeeper at FC Volendam, broke into a broad smile at the mention of Newcastle United but visibly stiffened when the conversation turned to their father.
"It doesn't affect us much as a family, because we know how our father is and he always protects us," Roy said. "He's always there for us. People also know that what those people say about him is pure bull****."
Roy went on to list some of the claims made about his father during the saga.
"And it's said that he's the agent," he said, before shrugging and sighing. "That's not even true. So people are coming out with information that's incorrect. Everything they say..."
Roy shook his head, visibly irritated, before adding: "We don't attach much value to that."
Sean Steur completed his move to the Premier League in a deal worth €27m. At Newcastle, he becomes team-mates with fellow Dutchman Sven Botman, who is beginning his fifth season with the Magpies. The 18-year-old midfielder started for Newcastle in Saturday's 3-0 pre-season win over Darlington, playing the first half before being substituted.
Sean had reportedly reached a principle agreement over a new long-term contract at Ajax under former technical director Alex Kroes, but that arrangement was shelved after Kroes departed the club in February.
His successor, Jordi Cruyff, was unable to offer the same guarantees over playing time, given the presence of fellow midfielder Jorthy Mokio, whose own contract had already been extended. That uncertainty, rather than any deliberate strategy from the family, appears to have been the key factor that ultimately pushed Steur towards Newcastle.
The teenager made 26 appearances for Ajax's first team across all competitions, scoring once and providing two assists, having progressed through the club's academy since joining at the age of eight.
