Marco Silva deflected questions about a potential move to Benfica after Fulham's 3-0 defeat to Arsenal at Craven Cottage on Saturday, insisting his only focus is on the three games that remain of the season.

Benfica have placed Silva on their shortlist to replace José Mourinho, who is expected to leave the Lisbon club this summer with Real Madrid's interest in his services intensifying.

The two clubs share a shared history in Silva's career — he managed Sporting, Benfica's fiercest rivals, between 2014 and 2015, winning the Taça de Portugal — while Benfica director-general Mário Branco worked alongside him at Estoril at the start of his managerial career.

Silva's current contract at Fulham expires in June. The club have offered him a new three-year deal, which The Athletic's David Ornstein reported would make him one of the top six highest-paid managers in the Premier League, but he has not yet signed. He is known to leave decisions late.

Speaking to DAZN after the Arsenal defeat, Silva chose his words carefully.

"In this moment, my future is not the most important thing. My contract is expiring, there are many rumours, but the club has been clear that it wants to keep me for more years. They are trying to make that happen and now the focus is only on the three remaining games."

He spoke about Fulham's season in broader terms.

"The season has been very positive, once again. Despite many difficulties, we managed to overcome them and we are in a position that could take us into Europe. There is a lot to analyse and evaluate — we need to sit down and understand how the season went, what the future might hold, and then make decisions."

On Benfica directly, he was firm.

"I speak only about Fulham. I am proud to represent them. I am already in my fifth season. The club wants to continue with the project — it is logical, it is normal that this happens. As for the rest, we will make decisions at the end of the season."

Silva has won 103 of his 225 matches in charge of Fulham since arriving in July 2021. Under his management the club won the Championship title, established themselves as a stable Premier League presence and are now on the cusp of European qualification for the first time. Chelsea are also monitoring him as a potential successor to interim head coach Calum McFarlane, adding a third option to a summer that could define the next phase of his career.
