Shakhtar Donetsk intend to reopen discussions with Tottenham over compensation for Manor Solomon after the winger’s move to West Ham.

Chief executive Sergei Palkin says the Ukrainian club will make a formal approach to Spurs, claiming the two sides had verbally agreed that Tottenham would pay Shakhtar a share of any future sale.

Solomon joined Tottenham on a free transfer in July 2023 after a FIFA ruling allowed foreign players at clubs in Ukraine and Russia to suspend their contracts following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Shakhtar had objected to the circumstances of his departure and previously threatened legal action, arguing that the Israel international was worth around €20 million (£16.9m).

Tottenham subsequently sold Solomon to West Ham this summer for an initial fee of £5m, prompting Shakhtar to revisit the issue.

“We had arguments and discussions with Tottenham,” Palkin said.

“Verbally, we agreed that when they sell the player, they will pay us part of the sale. Now we will come to them officially with our suggestions and our view of the situation.

“If we have problems in these discussions and negotiations, we will go to some intermediaries.”

Palkin said he hoped the clubs could reach an amicable settlement rather than allow the dispute to escalate. However, Shakhtar are prepared to seek outside assistance if negotiations fail.

He identified the European Club Association and the Court of Arbitration for Sport as possible avenues if an agreement cannot be reached.

“If they are friendly and we agree, then this issue is closed. It's better to do it in a friendly way,” he said.

Shakhtar’s position centres on the alleged verbal understanding reached when Solomon moved to north London. The club believes that the subsequent transfer to West Ham should trigger a payment, although no agreement on compensation has been announced.

The dispute places Tottenham under renewed pressure to respond to Shakhtar’s claim, more than three years after Solomon left Ukraine under the special FIFA arrangements.
