Rose outlines Bournemouth's Milosavljević plan as defender builds fitness

Veljko Milosavljević is building up his match fitness with Bournemouth’s Under-21s, although Marco Rose says the defender could already be called upon if needed.

The Serbian centre-back is continuing his recovery from a long-term injury and has started featuring for Alan Connell’s development side in Premier League 2. Bournemouth are keen to increase his playing time gradually before bringing him back into the first-team picture on a regular basis.

Rose believes Milosavljević has made encouraging progress, but says the defender still needs more competitive minutes after spending an extended period away from action.

“He did well but you see that he lack games like this, matches with our shirt,” Rose told the Daily Echo when asked whether the defender was back in contention for the senior side after making two appearances for the development squad.

The Bournemouth head coach wants to use the Under-21s to provide the 20-year-old with the opportunity to regain his sharpness and build the fitness required for the demands of first-team football.

“So we going to give him more match time in the under 21s.

“And if we need him he would be ready even now for some minutes.

“If we can give him the time there to increase his level on fitness and match practice, we going to give him the time to play there.”

Rose's comments indicate that Milosavljević is not being ruled out of first-team involvement, even though the immediate priority is to increase his workload at development level. The manager is prepared to use him if circumstances require it, but would prefer to give him further opportunities with Connell's side first.

The defender joined Bournemouth from Red Star Belgrade in January 2026, signing a long-term contract after establishing himself in Serbian football. He arrived with considerable potential, having already made senior appearances for Red Star and represented Serbia at youth international level.

His progress was interrupted by injury, leaving him with ground to make up before he can compete consistently for a place in Rose’s side. The current arrangement gives him the chance to build match rhythm without being rushed back into the intensity of Premier League competition.

For now, Bournemouth’s plan is straightforward: provide Milosavljević with as much game time as possible at Under-21 level, monitor his fitness and increase his first-team involvement when he is ready.
