The defeat at King Saud University Stadium in Riyadh came five days after Al-Nassr were seconds away from winning the Saudi Pro League title, only for a goalkeeping error by Bento to gift Al-Hilal a stoppage-time equaliser. The double disappointment within a week drew immediate comparisons to two of the most painful near-misses in the club's recent history.
Deniz Hümmet was the unlikely hero for Osaka, turning onto an Issam Jebali pass in the 30th minute and burying a composed low finish into the corner of the net. The goal came against the run of play and was confirmed by VAR after a check for offside. Gamba's goalkeeper Rui Araki, 18 years old, then produced a breakout performance, making six saves to preserve the lead as Al-Nassr mustered 20 attempts and 68 per cent possession across the 90 minutes.
Ronaldo missed several chances across the match. His closest moment came in the 86th minute when a clear sight of goal was blocked by Genta Miura at the last instant. Joao Félix struck the post. Sadio Mané forced repeated saves. None of it was enough.
When the final whistle sounded, Ronaldo walked directly down the tunnel without waiting for the medal ceremony. Al-Nassr manager Jorge Jesus immediately turned attention to what remains.
"We didn't get what we wanted here, but there is one more final for us — the Saudi Pro League title, which is very important to us. We have five days to recover and prepare and there is no time for grieving."
Al-Nassr sit two points clear of Al-Hilal with one league game remaining. A win at home to Damac on Thursday would confirm their first Saudi Pro League title since 2019. Since joining the club in December 2022, Ronaldo's only official silverware remains the 2023 Arab Club Champions Cup, widely regarded as an exhibition competition.
