Roma are accelerating their pursuit of Greenwood and preparing a proposal designed to meet Marseille's June 30 financial deadline — with a clause in the forward's contract set to increase his price by €5 million from July 1 adding real urgency to the negotiations, according to Corriere dello Sport.
Marseille are holding out for a total of €55 million, comprising €50 million guaranteed and €5 million in bonuses. AS Roma are unwilling to match that in a single payment.
Their proposed solution involves an initial cash payment of €15-20 million by June 30 — a sum that would allow Marseille to book the deal in their 2026 financial accounts and satisfy the club's financial watchdog, the DNCG, ahead of an urgent audit — followed by a second tranche of around €35 million, including bonuses, paid in instalments.
The financial pressure on Marseille is real. The club failed to qualify for the Champions League and must demonstrate sound financial footing to the DNCG before the end of the month. Roma have identified that constraint as the key lever in bringing the fee down, and believe the structured payment approach meets both clubs' needs.
Greenwood, 24, scored 26 goals and registered 11 assists in 45 appearances for Marseille last season after joining from Manchester United for €26 million in 2024. He has already indicated his willingness to move to Rome. Manchester United retain a 40 per cent sell-on clause, meaning a €55 million transfer would generate around €11.6 million for the Old Trafford club.
From July 1, a contractual clause triggers an automatic increase in Greenwood's price to €60 million. Roma are aware that hesitation could cost them an additional €5 million they are not prepared to pay.
Roma sports director Tony D'Amico views Greenwood as the primary attacking addition for the club's Champions League return, and the coming days are described as decisive.
