The Espanyol striker came on against the Czech Republic at the Carlos Tartiere in the UEFA Nations League, turning his long-awaited international breakthrough into an important moment for the club as well as the player.
Roberto had already made a major impact at Espanyol this season, scoring six goals in seven league appearances. His form had strengthened his importance to the side, but the Spain appearance also triggered a financial clause agreed when he joined the club permanently from Sporting Braga in 2025.
AS reported that his release clause has now risen from €25 million to €30 million following his international debut.
The increase gives Espanyol greater protection if interest develops in the striker, although the club would not receive the full €30 million from a release-clause sale under its current ownership arrangement.
Espanyol currently hold 62.5 per cent of Roberto’s economic rights after paying €7.75 million to Braga. A €30 million clause would therefore leave the Spanish club entitled to €18.75 million if it were triggered at the current percentage.
The agreement can become more favourable for Espanyol. If Roberto remains at the club at the end of the season, Espanyol can increase its share to 75 per cent by paying a further €1.55 million, provided the team remains in LaLiga.
That would mean a €30 million clause producing €22.5 million for Espanyol if another club, including one from the Premier League, paid the full amount.
The club also has an option to acquire the remaining 25 per cent of Roberto’s economic rights for another €3.1 million. If Espanyol exercise that option, its total investment in the striker would reach €12.4 million, while a future €30 million clause sale would belong entirely to the club.
Roberto’s debut therefore carries significance beyond personal recognition. His performances have already increased his value on the pitch, and the contractual mechanism tied to Spain’s decision to use him has now increased the financial value attached to one of Espanyol’s most important attacking players.
The change gives Espanyol another layer of protection as Roberto’s performances continue to attract attention.
