France centre-back Ibrahima Konaté is due to arrive as a free agent from Liverpool and Netherlands right-back Denzel Dumfries to join from Inter Milan for €20m.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed a full agreement has been reached with Dumfries and his representatives, with Real Madrid set to activate the release clause in the 30-year-old's contract with Inter. The clause, which had been widely reported at €25m but confirmed at €20m, allows Madrid to bypass negotiations entirely. Personal terms are already finalised.
Konaté, 27, confirmed his Liverpool departure on Sunday after the club announced he would leave when his contract expires at the end of June. Advanced discussions between the France international and Real Madrid have been ongoing since February, according to Radio MARCA, and Fabrizio Romano subsequently confirmed a verbal agreement is in place over a four-year deal. The transfer is contingent on Florentino Pérez's re-election as president on Sunday, which is considered a formality.
Both signings address the same acute problem: a defensive unit that Mourinho has identified as the priority area for reconstruction. Dani Carvajal's contract expires at the end of this month, leaving the right-back position vacant. Dumfries provides an immediate solution — a physical, attack-minded wing-back who made 28 appearances for Inter this season, contributing five goals and two assists, and whom Mourinho personally requested.
Konaté's arrival fills the void left by David Alaba's injury-ravaged decline and provides cover for an area that has been undermined by physical problems with Éder Militão and inconsistency from Dean Huijsen.
Both players are in their respective World Cup squads — Konaté with France, Dumfries with the Netherlands — and Madrid are aiming to complete the formal paperwork on both deals before the tournament begins on June 11.
The Konaté signing carries an uncomfortable echo for Liverpool. He follows Trent Alexander-Arnold in walking away from Anfield at the end of his contract to join Madrid for nothing — the second successive summer the club has lost a key defender on the same route.
