Valverde has excelled in an unfamiliar position since returning to the right side of defence following Vinícius Júnior's dismissal against Villarreal. His performances have been so convincing that two recognised right-backs have gradually disappeared from Jose Mourinho's starting line-ups.
The midfielder's contribution was particularly impressive during the recent Clásico against Barcelona. He provided the assist for Yan Diomande's first goal for Madrid and created three chances, matching the winger for the highest total among his team-mates.
His defensive work was equally influential, with four recoveries, two interceptions, a clearance and four successful duels from five attempts. He was not dribbled past during the match.
However, Valverde was forced off in the 62nd minute after experiencing discomfort in the back of his right thigh. He had attempted to continue through the problem, but Mourinho eventually replaced him with Dumfries.
Medical examinations subsequently confirmed that Valverde had not suffered a serious injury, meaning his position is not necessarily under immediate threat. Nevertheless, the episode has highlighted the importance of having alternatives available.
Alexander-Arnold's situation has been particularly difficult. Arriving in 2025 as a natural successor to Dani Carvajal, the England international initially demonstrated his attacking qualities but struggled with recurring muscular injuries.
Those problems restricted him to 30 appearances in his first campaign, comprising 21 in LaLiga and nine in the Champions League. He has also found opportunities limited this season, featuring for only 53 minutes since Mourinho settled on Valverde at right-back.
Dumfries, meanwhile, arrived from Inter for a reported €20m and has played in 10 of Madrid's 13 competitive matches, accumulating almost 600 minutes. Despite Mourinho having specifically requested his signing, the Dutchman has not secured a regular starting position.
The manager had previously insisted that both defenders would receive opportunities.
"It is not possible to think that one will play 60 matches and the other none. Or one plays 10 and the other 50. That is not possible. We have a lot of quality," Mourinho said.
For now, however, Valverde remains his preferred option. The Uruguayan's performances have made it difficult for either specialist right-back to displace him, but his physical condition could create an opening.
With Madrid facing a demanding run of fixtures, Mourinho will need to manage his squad carefully. Alexander-Arnold and Dumfries have been waiting for a more substantial opportunity, and Valverde's workload may yet provide it.
