RB Leipzig could consider bringing back Julian Nagelsmann if head coach Martín Demichelis fails to improve the team’s results, although no concrete discussions over a reunion have taken place.

According to Sky Sport Germany, Nagelsmann remains highly regarded within the Leipzig organisation, with Red Bull chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff among those who admire the former coach.

Demichelis was appointed ahead of the current season, but Leipzig have made a slow start to the Bundesliga campaign. They have collected six points from their first four matches and sit ninth in the table.

Despite the disappointing opening, Demichelis is not currently considered to be on the verge of losing his job. Leipzig want to see a clear improvement in performances and results before any decision about his future is taken.

Nagelsmann’s name has nevertheless emerged as a possible option should the club eventually decide to make a change. The 39-year-old has previous experience at Leipzig, having coached the team before moving to Bayern Munich.

He has also managed Hoffenheim and most recently served as Germany national team coach. His familiarity with Leipzig and his standing within the wider Red Bull organisation could make him an attractive candidate if the club begins searching for a replacement.

Nagelsmann left the Germany post following the national team’s disappointing World Cup campaign, with Jürgen Klopp subsequently appointed as the new head coach, according to the report.

However, there is currently no indication that Leipzig have opened negotiations with Nagelsmann or made a formal approach. Any potential return remains dependent on how the team performs under Demichelis over the coming weeks.

For now, the club’s position is that the current coach retains their backing, but the expectation is that results must improve. Leipzig will need to show progress if Demichelis is to strengthen his position and prevent speculation about a change in the dugout from intensifying.

Nagelsmann’s continued popularity means he could become a name to watch if circumstances change, but a reunion remains a possibility rather than an active project.

The coming matches should provide a clearer indication of whether Demichelis can turn Leipzig’s season around or whether the club will eventually consider alternatives.
