Leipzig have lost their last two matches, a 3-1 defeat by Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga followed by a 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League, results that Bild reported had fuelled internal doubts about Demichelis just weeks into his tenure as successor to Ole Werner, who had guided the club back into the Champions League. Sporting director Marcel Schafer moved to address the growing speculation in an official club statement on Friday.
"We have of course noticed what has been discussed in the media and on social networks around our club in recent days. We are very ambitious and at the same time self-critical.
"The last two results do not meet our own standards - we know that, and we're not sugarcoating it. We are dealing with that very clearly internally," Schafer said.
Schafer called for patience while stressing unity behind the head coach.
"At the same time, we remain calm, focused and stand together as a club. That applies to all staff, the team and the entire coaching staff. Everyone has our support and our trust," he said, adding: "We made a lot of changes over the summer, integrated new players and repeatedly had to deal with injuries.
"Important players are coming back now. A newly assembled team needs time to find itself and develop its processes. That is the reality."
Schafer said the priority now was collective responsibility rather than searching for scapegoats.
"It's about drawing the right conclusions together, continuing to work hard and steering the development in the right direction in the coming weeks. We stand together, take responsibility together and continue on our path consistently. We will not be deterred from that by the current discussions," he said.
Leipzig, who face bottom club Hamburger SV on Sunday looking to arrest their slide, brought in Demichelis this summer after his previous role at Bayern Munich's reserve side, with the Argentine having also managed River Plate and CF Monterrey earlier in his coaching career.
A win at the Red Bull Arena is regarded as close to essential given the mounting pressure, with the club keen to avoid a repeat of the 2024-25 season's early Champions League group-stage exit.
