Marcus Rashford's future has dragged on for months, but the saga looks set to end with the 28-year-old back in a Manchester United shirt for pre-season.

The attacker spent last season on loan at Barcelona, where he thrived, but the Catalan club have been unwilling to trigger his buy-out clause, instead trying to negotiate a fresh loan.

Rashford has reportedly ruled out a permanent return to his parent club. Reports emerged in mid-June that Michael Carrick had opened initial talks aimed at bringing Rashford back into the fold, and the Guardian now reports he will be reintegrated into the United squad ahead of next season, training with the senior group throughout pre-season and beginning the campaign with the team.

That does not rule out a sale before the transfer window closes, however, with Tottenham previously said to be considering a bid for the forward this summer.

Rashford recorded eight goals and seven assists in 32 La Liga appearances for Barcelona last season, 18 of them as a starter, helping the club to the title before his temporary stay in Catalonia came to an end. His contract with Manchester United runs until the summer of 2028.

Manchester United had hoped to sell Rashford outright this summer to ease their wage bill and fund a move for a new left winger, but a lack of concrete offers has left the club with little choice but to plan around him instead.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Aston Villa have all been credited with monitoring his situation, though each is understood to prefer another loan rather than a permanent deal, an option United are unwilling to entertain this time.

Sporting director Jason Wilcox has made clear internally that Rashford will not be treated as an outcast if he stays, with the forward set to train fully with the first team once he returns from a short break following England's World Cup campaign.
