The Austrian football federation confirmed the decision, announcing on its website that the head coach has renewed his contract until 2028.
The federation's statement read in full.
"The decision has been made: head coach Ralf Rangnick will continue his successful work with the Austrian national team and will remain with the Austrian Football Association at least until UEFA Euro 2028."
The renewal followed several months of discussions between Rangnick and federation officials. Both Rangnick and federation president Josef Pröll had repeatedly stressed during that period that the talks were marked by mutual respect, clear understanding and a shared desire to continue the team's development in a sustainable way. The ÖFB's supervisory board voted unanimously in favour of the renewal.
The agreement closes the door on weeks of speculation linking Rangnick with a senior advisory role at AC Milan, where the German coach had reportedly been offered a position as technical director by the club's ownership group. Talks had stalled after Rangnick set out conditions for taking on the role, including overseeing the youth sector, a proposal that met resistance from within Milan's hierarchy.
With his future now resolved, Rangnick can turn his full attention to Austria's World Cup campaign. David Alaba and Marko Arnautović lead a squad that opens its tournament against Jordan on June 17 in Santa Clara, in a group that also includes Argentina and Algeria.
Rangnick, who has managed the Austrian national team since 2022 and has overseen 45 matches with an average of close to two points per game, said the renewal reflected where he felt most at home.
"I said from the start that this renewal is a decision of principle, in which many factors played a part."
Under his guidance, Austria have developed significantly both on and off the pitch in recent years and established themselves on the international stage. With the contract now secured through to the next European Championship, the federation's message is one of continuity as Austria look to build on that progress at the World Cup and beyond.
