Porto dig in on Froholdt as Arsenal lead Premier League pursuit

Arsenal have held preliminary talks over a deal to sign FC Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt this summer, but face significant resistance from the Portuguese champions, who are determined to retain the 20-year-old for at least another season.

Froholdt joined Porto from FC Copenhagen last July for €20 million and has delivered one of the most impressive debut campaigns by a young midfielder in European football this term — eight goals and six assists in 49 appearances, helping Porto win their 31st Portuguese title. His release clause stands at €85 million, though Porto would consider a sale for around €60 million given financial pressures.

Arsenal's interest has been confirmed by Danish outlet Bold and subsequently reported across multiple sources. Liverpool, Newcastle United and Manchester United have all been credited with monitoring him, with Arsenal understood to have gone furthest in terms of actual contact with his representatives.

Froholdt fits a specific need at the Emirates Stadium. Mikel Arteta signed both Martin Zubimendi and Christian Nørgaard last summer, but Nørgaard is understood to be leaving — linked strongly with a move to Brentford under Keith Andrews — and Zubimendi's role alongside Declan Rice has become increasingly fluid. Froholdt, described by those around the Danish national team as a "Duracell Bunny" for his energy and athleticism, offers a creative, high-intensity profile that complements Rice's controlling presence.

However, Porto have the upper hand for now. The club qualified for next season's Champions League and coach Farioli wants to keep his core group together. Crucially, Froholdt has made clear he is not pushing to leave.

"I already feel at home in Porto and I'm very happy here. I would love to continue here next season, playing in the Champions League for FC Porto."

Those words have given Porto genuine confidence. Denmark's failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup also removes the international stage that might have accelerated a bidding war around him this summer.

Arsenal will likely need to fund any deal through sales, with the futures of Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Ben White all uncertain.
