Brentford's interest in Palmeiras left-back Arthur Gabriel appears to have arrived at exactly the wrong moment, with the Brazilian club moving to strengthen their grip on the academy graduate just as European interest builds.

Reports in Brazil named Brentford among the clubs monitoring the 20-year-old earlier this month, alongside Borussia Dortmund. Palmeiras have now responded by planning fresh talks with Arthur and his representatives over an improved contract, according to Nosso Palestra.

The move is not aimed at extending his deal, which already runs until 2029, but at rewarding his rapid breakthrough into the first team and reinforcing the club's position amid the growing attention from abroad.

Arthur's rise has been one of the stories of Palmeiras' season. He joined the club's academy at the age of 11 and spent almost a decade working his way up through the youth ranks.

Last year he turned down interest from Saudi Arabian side Neom, believing a route into Palmeiras' senior squad would open up in 2026. That decision has been vindicated, with Arthur establishing himself in the first-team picture and catching the eye of clubs across Europe.

Palmeiras now regard the defender as effectively untouchable in the current market, a marked shift from his position at the start of the year, when he was still simply hoping to break into first-team contention.

For Brentford, the timing of their interest now looks considerably more difficult to act on, with Palmeiras working actively to close off any opportunity for a club to take advantage of Arthur's rising profile at a discounted price.

The improved terms under discussion are expected to come alongside a significant increase in his release clause, a standard mechanism Brazilian clubs use to protect their most valuable young players from departing for fees well below their market value. Palmeiras have used similar strategies in the past with other academy products before eventually negotiating substantial transfer fees once European interest reached a critical point.

Brentford's recruitment department has built a reputation in recent seasons for identifying value in markets other Premier League clubs overlook, and Arthur's profile โ€” technically gifted, contractually secure, and now firmly established at first-team level โ€” fits the kind of long-term project the club has pursued previously, even if Palmeiras' current stance makes any near-term move unlikely.
