The 19-year-old has emerged as a potential target for the Premier League club, with Newcastle understood to have followed his development before an injury interrupted his progress.
According to reports from Chronicle Live, Bouwman has been on Newcastle’s radar for some time and could now be considered for a move to England.
Chelsea are also reportedly interested in the teenager, who remains under contract with Ajax until 2030.
Bouwman had established himself as a regular starter for Ajax before suffering an injury during the club’s meeting with PSV last month.
The centre-back was involved in a collision with Ruben van Bommel and has since been sidelined.
His performances before the injury had attracted attention outside the Netherlands, with his development continuing at pace after breaking through into Ajax’s first-team setup.
Newcastle United already have recent experience of recruiting from Amsterdam. The club signed Ajax midfielder Sean Steur during the summer for a reported €27 million.
Bouwman and Steur previously played together in Ajax’s youth system and also appeared alongside one another at senior level, meaning the defender would already know one of Newcastle’s recent arrivals.
The potential move could also reunite Bouwman with another Dutchman at St James’ Park in Sven Botman.
Botman came through Ajax’s academy but left the club without making a first-team appearance before eventually establishing himself in the Premier League.
Bouwman’s situation remains complicated by his injury, however, with Ajax continuing to assess his recovery.
The defender could return to the squad for Saturday’s league meeting with NEC if he is deemed fit enough to be involved.
For Newcastle, his availability and recovery will therefore be important factors in any decision to pursue their reported interest.
The Magpies are continuing to look at options for the centre-back position, and Bouwman’s age, potential and existing experience at Ajax make him an attractive long-term candidate.
No formal transfer has been agreed, but Newcastle’s reported interest provides another indication of the attention Bouwman has attracted since establishing himself in Amsterdam.
