The 18-year-old joined Newcastle from Ajax during the summer and has since continued his development in the Premier League.
Steur was selected for Jong Oranje for the first time this month, with the Netherlands facing Norway, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina in their latest qualifying fixtures.
Reiziger had previously held Steur back from the Under-21 squad while he was establishing himself at Ajax, but believes the midfielder has continued to develop since moving to England.
“Now Sean continues to develop at Newcastle, which is very nice to see,” Reiziger said.
“He can simply play football well. And the minutes he can get there, he has to increase them, then he will become even stronger.”
Reiziger was particularly impressed by Steur’s ability to influence matches despite his age.
“That he already plays so much at the highest level, in the best competition in the world, at a club that is also highly regarded there, I think is very impressive for his age,” he said.
“Sean is a footballer you don’t see very often. He reads the game, has drive, is calm on the ball and can really take control of the game.”
Steur came through Ajax’s academy after joining the club as a seven-year-old and made his senior debut before moving to Newcastle on a five-year contract. ([Newcastle United][3])
Reiziger also highlighted Steur’s willingness to organise those around him.
“I saw that last year at Ajax too, that he already wanted to put players in their positions because he knows: if you stand there, I become free somewhere else,” he said.
The midfielder is now looking to establish himself at Newcastle while helping Jong Oranje through a demanding qualification campaign.
