Newcastle loanee Woltemade under pressure as Juventus assess striker options

Nick Woltemade is facing growing scrutiny after a costly miss for Germany intensified questions about his role at Juventus and the club's need for a more traditional centre-forward.

The 1.98-metre striker missed a clear chance against Serbia in Munich, sending the ball over an open goal from close range during Germany's 2-0 victory. The error quickly spread across German football coverage, reviving concerns about the national team's search for a reliable number nine.

Woltemade's difficult moment has also prompted renewed examination of his early spell in Turin. Juventus brought him in on a straight loan until the end of the season, with the expectation that he could provide a different attacking option.

Coach Luciano Spalletti had hoped the change of environment and the influence of Germany manager Jürgen Klopp would help the forward build confidence. So far, however, Woltemade has struggled to make a convincing case for a regular role.

Part of the difficulty is the distinction between the player he is and the striker Juventus need. Woltemade has described himself as more of a second striker than a conventional number nine and has openly acknowledged that his aerial game is not one of his main strengths.

He also tends to move away from the penalty area to link play with teammates. That can be useful, but Juventus already have players capable of operating in similar positions, including Kenan Yıldız, Nico González and Weston McKennie.

The concern is not that Woltemade should be judged definitively after only a short time at the club. Rather, Juventus still need a forward who can occupy the opposition penalty area consistently and convert chances into goals.

The club are therefore already considering alternatives for next summer, when Woltemade is expected to return to Newcastle United under the terms of his loan.

Names under consideration include Mateo Retegui, now playing for Al-Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia, Folarin Balogun of Monaco and Antonio Raimondo, who belongs to Bologna and has impressed while playing for Frosinone.

Woltemade still has time to change the picture before the end of the season. His movement and link-up play offer qualities Juventus can use, but the missed chance against Serbia has sharpened the debate over whether he can fulfil the specific role the team requires.

For Juventus, the search for a long-term centre-forward is becoming increasingly important. For Woltemade, the challenge is to turn criticism into performances that demonstrate he can be more than a temporary solution.
