Newcastle build Brazil pipeline as Wilson replicates Forest model

Newcastle United are constructing a dedicated recruitment operation in South America, led by sporting director Ross Wilson, who oversaw the signing of nine Brazilian players during his time at Nottingham Forest between 2023 and 2025.

Wilson, who joined Newcastle United last October, has already hired Thomas Federspiel as the club's dedicated global scout for Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador.

The club sent scouts to the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior — the Copinha — earlier this year and came away rating the standard of the tournament as well above recent editions.

The focus going forward will be on Brazil's under-17 and under-20 competitions, with the Under-20 Brazilian League already on Newcastle's radar. The club are targeting players up to the age of 22 with development potential and future resale value in mind — entering negotiations earlier in the process than has historically been the norm for English clubs.

Wilson's track record in this market is the driving force. At Nottingham Forest he brought in Murillo and Carlos Miguel from Corinthians, and John, Jair, Cuiabano, and Igor Jesus from Botafogo. The expectation at St James' Park is that he can replicate that pipeline on Tyneside.

Newcastle completed their first official transfer of Wilson's tenure last month, signing Ecuadorian winger Johan Martinez, who will join from Independiente del Valle next year.

Brazilian recruitment has become a broader Premier League trend. This season, Rayan moved from Vasco da Gama to Bournemouth for €35 million, and Alysson joined Aston Villa from Grêmio for €10 million — both 19 years old at the time of signing.

Newcastle also have Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton as established Brazilian figures at the club, a factor that industry sources say strengthens the pitch to younger targets considering their options across Europe.
