Approximately 25 representatives from the Public Investment Fund attended annual meetings at Matfen Hall, a country house in Northumberland, earlier this week. The discussions were described as constructive but candid, with all parties acknowledging that the season's results have fallen well short of what is expected at the club.
According to The Athletic, both sides agreed that a repeat of this campaign โ which has seen Newcastle United finish 13th, one place below newly promoted Sunderland, and suffer an 8-3 aggregate defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League last-16 โ will not be tolerated. The alignment on Howe's future comes with a clear understanding that improvement is non-negotiable.
Howe himself addressed the mood of the meetings after Saturday's 3-1 win over Brighton.
"No, I didn't seek any assurances about PIF's future financial support. But what came through was the determination to succeed and to continue to grow the club in every aspect. The desire is unchanged โ to try and get to the top of the Premier League, to try and win as many trophies consistently as possible."
He was also asked about the scale of the meetings and whether they felt like a review of his position.
"For us that is something we do every year. Of course this year was maybe not as easy as the previous years for us โ understandably so. They are just part of our routine."
The Brighton win, which ended a five-game losing run, has given Howe the breathing room to approach the final weeks of the season with more stability. Newcastle need to win their remaining three games โ against Nottingham Forest, Arsenal and Crystal Palace โ to have any realistic chance of Conference League qualification. That outcome would represent a significant salvaging of a season that had threatened to become genuinely damaging.
Howe took charge of Newcastle in November 2021 and guided them to a fourth-place finish and Champions League qualification in 2022/23. The structural ambition he helped create โ including the major summer spending that brought Alexander Isak and other key players โ has largely not translated into results this season. Whether the summer window can address the underlying issues without triggering a broader reset remains the central question hanging over the club.
